IB Math AI Tutor - HL & SL

Statistics, modelling, GDC strategies, Voronoi, Bayes, IB Math AI covers a wide and specific range of topics. I help AI students at every level navigate the course with confidence, from SL data analysis to HL Paper 3 investigations.

What is IB Math AI?

IB Mathematics Applications and Interpretation (AI) focuses on using mathematics as a practical tool, applying it to real-world problems in statistics, modelling, finance, and technology. It places the GDC (graphic display calculator) at the centre and rewards students who can interpret mathematical results in context.

AI is the right course for students heading into social sciences, business, environmental studies, design, or any field where data analysis and real-world modelling matter more than abstract proof. It's available at Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL). AI HL includes additional content, matrices, graph theory, Bayes' theorem, advanced statistics, and Paper 3, and is a genuinely demanding course.

AI vs AA, which should you choose? If your university path involves engineering, physics, pure maths, or economics, AA is the stronger preparation. If you're heading into social sciences, business, biology, psychology, or design, AI provides the statistical and modelling tools you'll actually use. When in doubt, ask your school, and feel free to ask me too.

GDC strategies, a key part of AI tutoring

The GDC is central to IB Math AI. Many students either under-use it (missing efficiency) or over-rely on it (losing method marks). I teach you to use it correctly, and to always show the working alongside it.

Regression & Correlation

Using the GDC to fit regression lines, find Pearson's r and Spearman's rank, and interpret the output in context, not just copy the numbers.

Statistical Tests

Chi-squared, t-test, and normal distribution tests on the GDC. I teach you to state hypotheses first, enter data correctly, and interpret p-values clearly.

Graphing & Solving

Using the GDC to graph functions, find intersections, and solve equations, while writing the setup that earns method marks.

Financial Maths

Using the TVM solver for compound interest, loans, and annuities. Setting up the inputs correctly and interpreting the sign conventions.

Remember: A GDC answer with no written setup earns zero method marks if the answer is wrong. I teach you to always write the equation or hypothesis before using the calculator.

How lessons work

01

Diagnostic first

We identify your specific AI gaps, whether it's stats, modelling, financial maths, or GDC technique, and build from there.

02

Personalised plan

Every lesson targets your exam timeline and the AI topics you find hardest. HL and SL treated differently, they demand different preparation.

03

Live via Zoom

Sessions on Zoom with GoodNotes and shared screen. We work through problems together in real time. Notes are always accessible after.

04

Past paper practice

Real IB AI past papers, with focus on how to interpret results in context and how to write answers that earn both M and R marks.

FAQs, IB Math AI

What is IB Math Applications and Interpretation (AI)?

IB Math AI is the IB Diploma mathematics course focused on applying maths to real-world contexts, statistics, modelling, financial maths, and technology. It's ideal for students heading into social sciences, business, biology, or design.

Is AI easier than AA?

They're different, not easier or harder. AI tests modelling, data interpretation, and GDC use. AA tests algebraic reasoning and proof. AI HL is genuinely demanding, with Voronoi diagrams, matrices, Bayes' theorem, and Paper 3. The right course depends on your degree path, not on difficulty.

What is Paper 3 in AI HL?

Paper 3 is a 1-hour extended investigation unique to AI HL and AA HL. It presents a longer, multi-part problem. Questions build on each other, so reading the full problem before starting and using all previous results is essential. I dedicate specific practice sessions to Paper 3 strategy.

How important is the GDC in AI?

Very important. The GDC is used in Papers 2 and 3 for regression, statistical tests, graphing, and financial calculations. Part of my AI tutoring specifically covers GDC fluency, knowing what to enter, how to read the output, and how to write the setup alongside the result.
