IB Math AA HL - Tutoring Online

AA HL is the most demanding IB Math course. Proof, complex numbers, advanced calculus, vector geometry, and a Paper 3 that requires a different kind of thinking. I help HL students master every topic and walk into the exam prepared.

Who this is for

IB Math AA HL is for students who need rigorous mathematical preparation for university courses in engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science, or economics. It is the most algebraically demanding IB Math course, with significantly more content than SL and a third exam paper.

My AA HL students range from high achievers who want to reach a 7, to students who are genuinely struggling and need someone to rebuild their foundations alongside the HL-specific content. Both types of students benefit from personalised lessons, the difference is where we start.

AA HL requires a different mindset. The exam rewards clear logical thinking and precise written communication, not just correct answers. A significant part of our work together is learning to write mathematics the way IB examiners expect to read it.

AA HL topics covered

Proof & Algebra

  • Proof by induction (sequences, divisibility, inequalities)
  • Proof by contradiction and direct proof
  • Partial fractions
  • Systems of equations and solution methods
  • Binomial theorem with non-integer exponents

Complex Numbers

  • Cartesian form: operations, conjugates, modulus
  • Polar form and Argand diagrams
  • Euler's form: e
  • De Moivre's theorem and roots of unity
  • Using complex numbers to solve real problems

Advanced Calculus

  • Integration by substitution and by parts
  • Differential equations: separable, homogeneous, integrating factor
  • Maclaurin series and approximations
  • Implicit differentiation and related rates
  • L'Hôpital's rule for indeterminate limits

Vectors & Geometry

  • Vector and Cartesian equations of lines
  • Equations of planes (normal vector, Cartesian)
  • Intersections: line/line, line/plane, plane/plane
  • Cross product and geometric applications
  • Distances: point to line, point to plane

Paper 3 Strategy

  • Reading the full problem before starting
  • Using scaffolded sub-parts strategically
  • Time management across the investigation
  • Writing proofs under exam conditions
  • Full past Paper 3 practice with feedback

How I approach AA HL specifically

AA HL demands more than knowing the content. Students need to be able to construct rigorous arguments, move fluently between representations (algebraic, graphical, geometric), and write proofs under time pressure. These are skills that develop through practice and feedback, not just watching worked examples.

In our lessons, I constantly ask you to explain your reasoning out loud. "Show that" and "prove" questions make up a significant part of the HL exam, and the only way to improve at them is to practise writing proofs and getting feedback on where the logical gap is. We work through the HL past papers systematically and I mark your work the way an examiner would.
