IB Math AI SL - Tutoring Online

AI SL is all about applying maths to the real world, statistics, modelling, financial maths, and using the GDC effectively. I help AI SL students understand what they're doing (not just how to do it), so they can handle any question the exam throws at them.

Who this is for

AI SL students often feel more comfortable with real-world problems than abstract algebra, and that's exactly what this course plays to. The syllabus covers statistics, probability, modelling, financial maths, and basic calculus, always in applied contexts. The GDC is central, and knowing how to use it properly is a genuine skill we develop together.

The most common challenge I see with AI SL students isn't that they can't do the maths, it's that they don't know how to communicate the answer in context. A chi-squared test result needs a conclusion in words. A regression equation needs an interpretation of the gradient. A normal distribution answer needs units. These habits are learnable, and they're worth marks.

A key AI SL skill: After every calculation, ask yourself, "What does this number mean in the context of the question?" If your answer is just a number with no units and no interpretation, you may have lost a reasoning mark. We practise this until it's automatic.

AI SL topics covered

Statistics

  • Sampling: random, stratified, systematic, convenience
  • Data display: box plots, histograms, cumulative frequency
  • Correlation: Pearson's r and Spearman's rank
  • Linear regression and interpreting the equation
  • Chi-squared test for independence
  • Normal and binomial distributions with GDC

Modelling & Functions

  • Linear, quadratic, exponential and log models
  • Sinusoidal modelling (seasonal/periodic data)
  • Logistic models (growth with limiting factor)
  • Choosing the right model from a graph or data
  • Fitting models with regression on the GDC
  • Interpolation and extrapolation, knowing the limits

Financial Maths

  • Compound interest: annual and non-annual periods
  • Depreciation: reducing balance method
  • Loans and annuities using the TVM solver
  • Amortisation tables and payment schedules
  • Interpreting financial results: total interest paid, term

Geometry & Calculus

  • 3D geometry: volume, surface area, trigonometry
  • Bearings and navigation problems
  • Differentiation: finding gradients and turning points
  • Integration: areas under curves in context
  • Kinematics: displacement, velocity, acceleration

GDC fluency, a core focus

Many AI SL students arrive knowing how to use the GDC for basic arithmetic but struggling with statistical tests, regression, and the TVM solver. These tools are tested directly in Papers 2 and are worth significant marks. Part of our work together is building genuine GDC fluency, knowing what to enter, checking the output makes sense, and writing the setup alongside the result.

At the same time, I teach you when not to over-rely on the GDC. For Paper 1 (calculator-free), you need to be able to work with distributions conceptually, sketch models from their equations, and perform basic statistical reasoning by hand. We train both modes together.

What AI SL students say

★★★★★

"You were very calm and patient with me. You never got tired of explaining things again and again until I understood. I will always remember your kindness and support."
